Around 50 people gathered in each of the lunch clubs of Mongkok, Wan Chai and Tsuen Wan for Mid-Autumn Festivals. Activities included lunch gathering, riddle guessing, giving gifts and sharing moon cakes.

In Mongkok, some of the beneficiaries took part themselves in the preparation of the event and were proud of being in charge. In Tsuen Wan, the lunch was also the opportunity to celebrate all birthdays from July to September and share birthday cakes. Those who blew their candles said they were very happy and touched because they had not celebrated their birthday for a long time.

In each location, the event was a big success in a sense that people had a chance to connect together, share their experiences and feelings, and help each other. Even the most reserved ones joined and enjoyed the events. It was a real pleasure to see everyone being involved.

What is “Guessing riddles”?

Guessing (solving) lantern riddles is one of the most important and popular activities of the Lantern Festival. Usually, Lantern owners write riddles on paper notes and pasted them upon the colourful lanterns. People crowd round to guess the riddles. If someone thinks they have the right answer, they can pull the riddle off and go to the lantern owner to check their answer. If the answer is right, there is usually a small gift as a prize.
